Royal Palace |

The palace was built in 1866 in the reign of King Norodom, The palace is in a temple-style compound, and was built by the French. Inside the Royal Palace, the Chan Chaya Pavillion
is the Royal dance hall, used by the king, his
relatives and high-ranking
officers.
Te Vinichhay
Temple

Silver Pagoda , also called Wat Preah Keo Morokot is located south of the Royal Palace. It draws its name from over 5000 silver blocks weighing nearly 6 tons. In the center of the temple is a magnificent statue of Buddha made of Baccarat crystal. In front is a 90kg golden Buddha studded with 9,584 diamonds, dating from1906. On The wall of the temple are ancient pictures describing the story of Ramayana, a famous Hindu epic. |

The National Museum was built in 1917-1920. Its stylish galleries contain many ancient objects relating to Cambodian history, and has numerous carvings and lingas. |

The monument was built in 1958 to symbolize Cambodian independence from French Indochina. Independence is celebrated in Cambodia on November 9th. The monument has a unique and peculiar style, and is also a memorial to Cambodian patriots who died for their country. The beautiful fountains , colourful lights and gardens surround this monument adding to its beauty.

The Khmer word ‘Phnom’ means ‘hill’ in English. Thus Phnom Penh translates as ‘Penh Hill’. It is the only hill in Phnom Penh, and is the symbol of the city, Wat Phnom is set atop the 27m high mound. According to legend, the first temple on this site was erected in 1373 to house four statues of Buddha, deposited here by the waters of the Mekong, and discovered by a woman named Penh.

The Killing Rouge regime under its leader Pol Pot controlled Cambodia from 1975-1979. During this period, around 2 million Cambodia lost their lives. Most of the deaths were due to poor nutrition, overwork, absence of medical care , torture and neglect.

| Toul Sleng Genocide Museum |
 |
Prior to the Khmer Rouge take-over, Toul Sleng was the Toul Svay Prey High School. The Khmer rouge leader’s security forces turned this school into one of the nationwide detention and interrogation centers. This has now been converted to a museum and the pictures of torture, torture tools and torture rooms highlight the pain the people went through during the Khmer Rouge period.

| The Choeung Ek Killing Fields |

The Khmer Rouge regime also brutally killed thousands of people it suspected of treachery. It is important to note that there are ‘killing fields’ all over Cambodia. However, the best Know is at Choeung EK, outside Phnom Penh, where over 17,000 men, women, children and infants were executed. This site showcases blood stained clothes, skulls and bones. You will see a number of number of mass graves here.

Also known as the Central Market was built in 1935-37 and has the largest range of products on sale. It is indeed in the center of town, and this yellow, art deco edifice is hard to miss. It has a domed central hall and four large extensions filled with small booths. Everything from gold and jewelry to electronic goods and souvenirs are on sale.
